Smith Mountain Lake covers 22,000 acres and stretches forty miles from The Roanoke River to the base of Smith Mountain. Three counties border Smith Mountain Lake, Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania. Although the population of the Smith Mountain Lake community is only 18,000 people on a year round basis, it is considerably higher from April through October.
